I started writing in Quora few years ago . Then I transitioned to Medium and Reddit slowly even though I don’t write very actively on any of the problems. I know many top writers in Quora such as Sean Kernan and Jeddiah Benhur Mochis Wisely have transitioned into medium too. From my experience, I wanted to highlight some major differences in these platforms

Monetization

In Quora, you can’t monetize your writings unless you are invited to Quora Partner Program by Quora itself. I wrote more than 500 answers and had 1100 followers but I didn’t have fortune to be invited. So I made $0 in Quora. However in Medium, you can become a partner by yourself without even writing anything. I became partner and earned few pennies so far for my 10 answers which is an achievement for me! In Reddit, you can earn coins from your fellow followers. These earnings/coins motivate you to be a writer even though some people are inherently passionate about their writings.

Spaces

In Reddit, We have subreddits for certain topics. We have world famous r/Wallstreetbets which created a storm in NYSE / NASDAQ with millions of followers. No one might have forgotten about GameStop (GME) frenzy. Anyone can be a member of subreddit and can post on it. Quora created spaces based on subreddit. In Quora spaces, you have to be invited to participate (Again same policy as monetization). Quora spaces are not rich like Subreddit. Medium has certain Publications were certain content are posted with strict guidelines. Since Medium is a premium program where you pay to read , contents are very rich and of high quality like a tabloid magazine. I would say Reddit and Medium are top notch in this area.

Moderation

Quora moderation is subjective and not transparent. Lots of writers left quora since they felt that policies are biased toward certain group or race or sex. Also the guidelines kept changing over the period of time. Earlier they banned writers for using pen name but it is changed recently. This has caused quite a bit of confusion. However Reddit doesn’t have that restriction from beginning and NSFW content is allowed very openly. Subreddit is moderated by Subreddit owners. In Medium, I haven’t seen much of restrictions either.

Languages

Quora is available in 24 languages. Many Indian language answers were written in Quora even though it is not widespread yet. Whereas Reddit is available in only 6 languages. Medium is available in 9 languages. So Quora wins top spot for multiple languages

In Summary, I would conclude that

  • Medium is very rich in content due to monetization. The quality of writing is superior.
  • Quora is top in number of languages supported.
  • Reddit is good for open forum. Example is wallstreetbets where moneymakers thrived.
